In the lead up to the WA Labor conference this weekend, the state member for Perth believes marriage equality has never been closer.
Shadow Minister for Multicultural Interests and Culture and the Arts John Hyde said the recent support for same-sex marriage from state Labor branches would put pressure on the federal government to amend the Marriage Act.
‘I think we’re closer to equality in marriage than ever before,’ Hyde told OUTinPerth.
A number of key WA Labor members including Hyde, Lisa Baker, Melissa Parkes and Senator Louise Pratt will be backing the motion, along with other key MPs including Labor leader Eric Ripper and Deputy Leader Roger Cook.
OUTinPerth understands Rainbow Labor, a sub-branch committed to gay and lesbian equality in the ALP will be introducing for the motion. In a statement, Hyde said WA Labor should endorse a motion calling on the Federal Government to legalise same-sex marriage.
‘Labor has always been a party of great social reform, be it giving women the right to vote, ending the White Australia policy and enabling indigenous people to vote,’ Mr Hyde said.
‘Equality for same-sex couples is an issue of equal opportunity, it’s not a marriage issue,’ Mr Hyde said.
New South Wales will be the next state Labor conference which will be held next month. If WA and NSW change their platforms, nearly all of the state Labor branches will have expressed support for same-sex marriage.
So far the Queensland, South Australian, Victorian, Tasmanian and Northern Territory state Labor branches have passed motions for the Federal Government to legalise gay marriage. While the Victorian state branch failed to pass a motion this year, it did pass a similar motion in 2009.
