WA Labor has endorsed same-sex marriage after a clear majority passed a motion at today’s state conference. Held at the Ascot Racecourse, the vote was won ‘on the voices’ without a hand count and received an enormous round of applause from supporters.
The speakers for the motion were Rainbow Labor President David Goncalves, Perth MLA John Hyde, former Labor MLA Alannah MacTiernan and Emma Kingdon.
SDA WA branch secretary Joe Bullock and Labor MLC Kate Doust spoke against the motion, citing that the state conference was not the place for the debate; that marriage had a special status and that the community was not ready for such a change.
Just before the vote, a motion was called to suspend standing orders momentarily to allow Mimah Comrie, a non-delegate, to address the conference. Comrie, the mother of Youth Affairs Council of WA Executive Officer Craig Comrie said this:
‘Equality is not something that is new to me, as a very young girl I left my home of Scotland to go to America to join the civil rights movement and walk in the first march on Washington with two hundred and fifty thousand others behind Martin Luther King and demonstrated for the rights of the African Americans, jobs and freedom.
‘My daughter has the right to marry, live in a de-facto relationship or engage in a civil union. My son as a gay man does not have the right to marry a partner of choice.
‘Denying my son the right to marry robs him of the right to be treated as an equal and devalues the meaning of equality.
‘A civil union does not cut it. You can not dilute equality it does not come in a weakened form.
‘What it is, is double standards, using sexual preference as the deciding factor. Saying to the gay and lesbian community that civil unions are as good as marriage, is like saying to Rosa Parks that a seat on the back of the bus is good enough, …because at least she’s on the bus.’
Goncalves, who moved the motion, said he was exhilarated following the vote.
‘We were pretty confident and the numbers show it… we had many more numbers than we expected.
‘This is probably the first in one of many steps; we’re working towards the ultimate endorsement at national conference.
‘We’ve got to build a coalition of support between delegates at national conference; between all the unions and also Members of Parliament whose support will be crucial.’
At a press conference earlier today, PM Julia Gillard denied Australia was behind the times when asked about the announcement of the state of New York legalising gay marriage.
‘We’ll make our own decisions in this country based on what’s right for Australia, my views in this area are well known,’ she said.
WA now joins Queensland, South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania and the Northern Territory as state Labor branches that have passed motions for the Federal Government to legalise gay marriage. While the Victorian state branch failed to pass a motion this year, it did pass a similar motion in 2009. The NSW Labor state branch has its biennial state conference on July 9 and 10 where it is understood that the marriage platform will be debated.

This State Conference calls upon the ALP National Conference to amend the National platform to support the legal right of all adult couples in Australia to be married if they so choose, and for that marriage to be recognised and registered by law in Australia, regardless of the sexual orientation, or gender, of the parties to the marriage.
The federal Labor conference will be held in December this year.
