Women Events On The Rise

Following a lack of women-only events in Perth, former Pride co-president Sharlene Dixon has launched a new online social group for lesbians.

Lesbian Space WA, a Facebook page for Western Australian women, has been hosting monthly events since February as well as creating a general forum for local women.

Waikiki resident Karen Murphy has attended some of the Lesbian Space events and said the events had been important since she didn’t go out to Perth’s gay venues.

‘We have had many great laughs at all the events, I’m glad some women had the incline to start such a group,’ she said.

Murphy said a wide range of women went to the events including young to mature-age women that don’t go to the clubs or pubs.

Dixon said the group was needed as it had become ‘extremely hard’ for women to meet.

‘There aren’t a lot of places for women-only that we know of in WA’ Dixon said.

The social group is not just for women on the internet, according to the creator, who said it was for all lesbians regardless of age.
‘We want to be able to give women of all ages ways to interact and meet other women without it being in a Pub/Club situation there are many who are over the pub/club scene.’

Other women’s-only events include the monthly Pride Women’s Sundowners which resumed last month at the Universal Bar in Northbridge.
