SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN (M)

Directed by Rupert Sanders

The second Snow White film released this year is by far the darkest. The characters remain grimy throughout the entire film, except when Snow White gets scrubbed up at the end, and there are genuinely scary scenarios. The memorable evil queen Ravenna (an ever-morphing Charlize Theron) sucks the youth out of beautiful young maidens in her kingdom and there’s a clan who purposefully scar their young girls’ faces. The dwarves, who are played by well-known British actors whose heads are digitally attached, add little levity and actually add to the disquieting tension. Ravenna has a fairly disturbing relationship with her brother Finn (Sam Spruell) who is just downright creepy. The special effects are brilliant but don’t expect any sparks to fly between Snow White (Kristen Stewart) and The Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) who is grieving over the murder of his wife. This is a good film, but not a tale for young children.
