SOMETHING FOR KATE – The Murmur Years – Sony BMG

Five albums and a decade on from their ARIA topping debut, Something for Kate takes the time to look back in a double disc retrospective. Far from a typical Greatest Hits, the band does what they do best – craft an album for their cult (er, I mean host) of fans. Ironically, the double disc collection starts with their only new track, The Futurist. Lead singer and band lyricist Paul Dempsey said of the track, ‘It feels really different to everything else we’ve done.’ Maybe so, but the steady, driving rhythm, melancholy guitar and signature chainsmoked vocals are still there. From their latest single, the band quickly blasts into tracks of yesteryear, sampling the well-known as well as live bootlegs, and the flow from one track to the next shows the group’s hand in crafting the collection. The end of the two-disc journey will surprise listeners as SFK covers timeless classics, including the Clash’s Rock the Casbah. Their cover of Bruce Springsteen’s Born to Run will leave listeners wondering who’s the boss.
