Couch Potato | ‘Bad Company’ pokes fun at the creative world

Bad Company is a new comedy series that comes to the ABC this Sunday. The series stars much-loved stars Kitty Flannagan and Anne Edmonds. Edmonds is also the writer of the series.

Flannagan plays success banking executive Julia McNamara who is redeployed to manage The Argyle, an avant-garde floundering theatre company. Here she butts heads with over-the-top artistic director Margie Argyle (Anne Edmonds).

Thrown into the world of theatre the new CEO is all about profit and loss, strategic planning and responsible spending. While the egomaniac Artistic Director is about feelings, drama, creativity and spectacle.

“I know you’d all prefer to interpretive dance until the electricity cuts off, but unfortunately someone has to make the tough decisions.” Julia declares after she becomes acquainted with the theatre company’s dire financial situation.

While the board of the theatre has pushed for a production that will bring in big audiences, at the last minute Margie pulls the show and instead announces they’ll be staging Le Paysan à Moitié Enterréa, a four-hour obscure French play.

It kicks off a series of clashes between the conservative no nonsense business leader and the free spirited brash and bossy creative visionary.

Filling out the cast is Cameron James who plays bumbling office manager Christian. Ben Pfeiffer as soft spoke wig maker Jacob who has to constantly justify why his skills are needed, Angella Dravid as costume designer Donna, Kira Puru as receptionist Kat, while Will Gibb plays Julia’s son Ryan whose decided he also wants to pursue a life in the theatre.

Bad Company makes its debut on Sunday April 26 at 8:15pm on ABC and ABC iView.

Kit Connor signs on for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Kit Connor will be back on our screens this July as Nick Nelson in Heartstopper Foerver, the Netflix film that wraps up the story of Nick and Charlie after three seasons of the popular television show.

It’s not the only project Connor has coming to the screen soon, he’s also signed on to play Charlie Bucket in a new version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. You might be thinking the 22-year-old is a little too old to play the boy who finds a golden ticket, but this is a while new version of the story.

The new production is completely animated and Connor will be providing the lead character’s voice. It’ll be set in modern day London and his character will be named Charlie Paley. Taika Waititi will be the voice of Willy Wonka.

In this continuation of the story Willy Wonka was jailed after the original Roald Dahl story charged over turning a child into a blueberry. Now out of prison he’s ready to get back to making the world a little sweeter.

Could Alan Davies be Doctor Who?

Speculation is growing the QI panelist and Jonathon Creek star Alan Davies could be stepping into the TARDIS and taking on the iconic role of The Doctor in Doctor Who.

Ncuti Gatwa departed the role at the end of the last series, and the cliffhanger saw the character regenerate into Billie Piper, who previously played companion Rose on the show.

The credit’s didn’t list Piper as playing the lead character though. Disney has pulled out of funding future episodes, returning the franchise to the sole hands of the BBC. The series, which began in 1963, will be back for a Christmas special this year, but its not clear if Piper or someone else will be playing the part.

Whenever there’s a new actor due to step into the role there’s always heaps of speculation on who it might be. One name that has come to fore is Alan Davies.

Showrunner Russell T Davies often returns to working with actors he’s used in the past. Previous doctors Christopher Eccleston starred in The Second Coming, a Russel T Davies penned series before he was cast in Doctor Who, while David Tennant starred in Casanova. Alan Davies memorably played Bob in the TV series Bob & Rose, the show about a gay man who suddenly finds himself in an unexpected straight relationship.

There’s also been speculation that David Tennant might return to the role for a third stint, Olly Alexander who starred in It’s a Sin has also been mentioned, alongside other actors from that show Lydia West and Omari Douglas. Michael Sheen, Lenny Henry, Michaela Coel, T’Nia Miller, and Hugh Grant have also been suggested.

Benn Dorrington interviewed Alan Davies for OUTinPerth back in 2011, while Graeme Watson spoke to Billie Piper in 2015.
