On 29 May Queer Liberation Boorloo will hold a fundraiser to support transgender youth in Queensland.
The event will take place at The Buffalo Club in Fremantle at feature local musical talents Lauren and the Goodfights, Johnny Roswell, Monstar, plus tunes from DJ Infinitee.
Funds raised will go to Project 491. Project 491 is an initiative led by AusPATH in response to the Queensland Government’s restriction on gender affirming care for trans and gender diverse children.
With government treatment options being closed off, many families now rely on private health care to meet their needs. The project helps families who need assistance meet the cost of treatments.
The Liberal Queensland government placed a block on new patients under the age of 18 being admitted to gender treatment programs in 2024 following concern over the operation of a facility in Cairns and has subsequently commissioned a review into youth gender treatments.
While a review of treatments in youth gender services undertaken by the previous Labor government had found the treatment pathways were suitable, the Crisafulli government commissioned a new independent review that was completed by Professor Ruth Vine.
The report from Professor Vine had presented the government with a range of options, including continuing treatment for young people needing access to the medication, but the government opted to continue their ban until at least 2031.
