Eurovision's Semi Final One

Its time for the Eurovision finals this weekend, last night the first semi-final of the competition took place and screened locally on SBS television. It had everytihng we love about Eurovision, dodgy tunes, bizarre dance moves and strange costumes.

We can’t wait to tune into tonight for the second round to see if Tooj from Norway wears a hoodie, will The Netherlands’ Joan Franka dress as an Indian or a Cowboy and if Lithuania’s Donny Montell really is as cute as a button.

Here are our top three favourites from the first night.

Russia

The Russian entry Buranovskie Babushki stood out with their song Party for Everybody. Six Russian grannies glad in bright red traditional garb singing out for everyone to ‘c’mon and dance’. We thought aging crooner Engelbert Humperdink representing the United Kingdom was an odd choice, but he’s got nothing on the grannies.

Take a look at their work.

Ireland

Ireland’s entry – Jedward, a band with a dubious level of talent took to the stage to perform Waterline dressed in gold spaceman outfits that would have made Lady Gaga proud.

A few weeks ago here at OUTinPerth we said the big question about this band would be if they performed with their hair in pointy or flat mode, they were neither, revealing a new half and half swishy style that was neither flat nor pointy. Most impressively at the end of the number they jumped into the water feature and got their hair all messed up – we thought they would have more precious about their hair.

When it was announced that the duo had secured the last remaining spot in the final they took the stage doing multiple cartwheels, which made them look like the lost cousins of the mighty morphing power rangers.

Check out Jedward’s performance below.

Albania

We were also captivated by Rona Nishliu representing Albania. Nishliu was a contested on Albanian Idol (is there a country that doesn’t have the show?) in 2004 and is a well known TV presenter. We love her quirky outfit, bizarre hair and lets be honest, she’s got quite a voice.
