Thoroughly Modern Millie

Thoroughly Modern MillyThis year WAAPA’s largest annual production will be hitting the stages of the Regal Theatre in the form of the musical ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’.

Director Crispin Taylor explained the scale of the show, which will tell the tale of a US girl from the country looking for love in New York.

“These guys will do at least three productions during their last year but this particular slot is our big show of the year it has a cast of about 40, an orchestra of about 25 and a crew of 50-60 people, it’s pretty big”, he explained.

One of the performers, Sean More, explained the plot for those that hadn’t heard of the lesser known musical.

“The story is a young girl leaving her nest, she’s from a country town and she takes that lead to go to New York and try to become a modern girl and a lot of people go through that. Even coming to WAAPA was scary but it was following that dream and she’s caught up in all this kind of, you know, love, she gets into all these kind of different situations.

“There’s an array of many different things in the show because it’s set in the roaring 20s and that’s when the jazz and liquor and speakeasys were all illegal. It’s set in the speakeasy which is kind of raunchy and sexy”

The director emphasised coming down to see the young talent before they make it big in the industry,

“These young people are about to be the stars of tomorrow so this is your chance to get to seem before you can’t afford them, you know?!”

‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’ will be showing at the Regal Theatre from the 15-22 June. Book now through Ticketek.
