In an interview with Fairfax Media Ross shared that the cancer was detected during a blood test before Christmas but they discovered that it had also spread to his liver.

Ross credited the support of his ex-wife, children, grandchildren and long term partner for his positive attitude.  It was the first time Ross, who retired from reading the news in 2009, has publicly mentioned Gray Bolte, his partner of 22 years.

“I have decided that the only way to handle this friggin’ nightmare is to remain as positive about it as I possibly can and to get back to leading as ‘normal’ a life as possible,” Ross said.

“Right now I feel healthy and well, I have no symptoms … but I don’t know how long that will last for.”
