Okawa was born in 1898, and is one of only five living people who were born in the 19th century, all of which are women.

Okawa has had three children, two of which are alive and in their 90s. She has four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

“Eat and sleep and you will live a long time.” she said to the Telegraph. “You have to learn to relax.”

At the age of 102, Okawa suffered a broken leg. After returning from the hospital, the staff of her nursing home found her doing leg squats holding on to the hand rail in the hallway. They asked her what she was doing, and she told them she was making sure her body did not get out of shape.
