Donald Trump, the leading candidate for the Republican Party’s Presidential nomination, appears to have reversed his position on marriage equality.

Previously Mr Trump had described marriage equality as a “dead issue” after the US Supreme Court decision in 2015. However in a new interview with Fox News Mr Trump seems to have opened up the possibility of reversing the Supreme Court’s ruling.

Speaking to Fox News Mr Trump said if he was elected he would be very strong on appointing conservative judges to the US Supreme court.

“…if I’m elected I would be very strong in putting certain judges on the bench that maybe could change things.” Mr Trump said.

Mr Trump said he felt the issue should be one for individual states to decide upon.

“At some point they have to get back down to business, but there’s no question about it, I wish it was done by the state.

“I disagree with the Supreme Court from the standpoint it should be a states’ rights issue. And that’s the way it should have been ruled on, not the way they did it. I can see changes coming down the line, frankly.”

When host Chris Wallace asked directly if Mr Trump would appoint new judges to overturn the ruling the aspiring politician said he would strongly consider it.

Mr Trump’s comments come just a day before the Iowa caucuses, a key stage in the presidential race. The candidate said he was grateful for the support he had received from Christians, evangelicals and pastors.
