The Milford St Shakers breathe new life into Motown

If you have a pulse and you’ve been alive since before the invention of the Commodore 64 you will likely be familiar with the music of Motown.

Performing songs from a playbook of classics originally laid down by artists like Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding and Diana Ross & the Supremes; the Milford St Shakers provided an evening of note perfect nostalgia.

Vocalist Lee Morunga and pocket rocket Kallan Phillips lead a solid ensemble of musicians through the evolution of soul music that began in the late 1950’s when Ray Charles took the sounds of Gospel and added to them stories about sex.

Covering songs that have almost been done to death, the Milford St Shakers breathe fresh life into songs like Reach Out (I’ll Be There), You Can’t Hurry Love and Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.

The Milford St Shakers clearly have an audience in their sights that are hungry to revive memories of days gone by, but the timeless quality of the music and its flawless delivery transcend generational barriers.

Perth’s best soul band had the silver haired zimmer-framed crowd dancing The Twist and The Watusi while the younger demographics still sang along to every word. An evening worth repeating.
