Acting Special Minister of State, Mathias Cormann has told Sky News that he understands a large number of eligible participants in the marriage postal survey have already returned their forms.

Over sixteen million Australians were sent forms asking if they supported allowing same sex couples to get married.

“I expect it will be a credible participation rate,” Senator Cormann said, setting aside fears that they survey result could lack authority if only a small number of people participated.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics is set to release it’s first weekly report on the level of forms being returned on Tuesday.

Senator Cormann said while the level of returns was encouraging, the government would be acting on the result of the survey, not it’s participation rate.

The senator denied reports suggesting that the cost of the survey would exceed it’s $122 million budget.

The final result of the survey will be released on November 15th.
