Ryan Seacrest returns as the host, and Katy Perry, Lionel Ritchie and country singer Luke Bryan will be passing judgement on the aspiring singers.

The US version of the show has turned out some big stars during it’s run including Kelly Clarkson, Adam Lambert and Carrie Underwood.

Since the franchise began in 2001 with the British show Pop Idol, 46 different versions of the show have been created in different countries, and while Australian Idol left our screens many years ago the US version has remained popular.

Foxtel will be broadcasting American Idol in Australia on their Fox8 channel. You can catch the show on Mondays and Tuesday from March 16, the AUstralian broadcasts will be just a few days behind the USA.

The nationwide search for America’s next superstar and singing sensation kicked off in Portland, Oregon as the Idol Bus travelled to 23 cities across the US in pursuit of talent.

Auditioning was made easier than ever as the show embraced new technological advances, performers also had the opportunity to submit audition videos online, as well as via select social media platforms using an official tag, #TheNextIdol. Also, for the first time in American Idol history, hopefuls had the opportunity to audition through a livestream platform.
