It’s the biggest boot-scooting hoe-down weekend in the queer calendar with Vic Park Pride’s major fundraiser Barn Dance taking over City Farm on Saturday night.
There’s still a few last minute tickets available for what is one of the best parties of the year, and you can also head down to Friday night’s Honkey Tonk event where you can refresh your boot-scooting skills.
To get everyone in the mood for the big weekend we’ve picked five tunes with a country bent to get you in the mood.
Orville Peck and Willie Nelson
Masked singer Orville Peck teamed up with country legend Willie Nelson for a rendition of this queer classic.
The song Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly Fond of Each Other was originally written and recorded in 1981 by Latin country musician Ned Sublette, and pokes fun at the stereotypes about both cowboys and gay subculture. Willie Nelson was introduced to the song in the mid-1980’s but didn’t release a recording of it until 2006, when he put together a compilation of lost recordings. Nelson commented that as the movie Brokeback Mountain had recently been released, it seemed like a good time to put his version of the tune out, describing it as a song that had spent too long in the closet.
The Cowgays
There’s a new tune out from The Cowgays. The collaboration between Brooke Eden, Chris Housman and Adam Mac have shared new song Been Done Did That. The three longtime friends decided to form their new band a few years ago when they were on a shared holiday to Mexico.

Remembering Dolly Parton
There’s sure to be lots of Dolly Parton songs played over the weekend following the iconic singer’s death earlier this week at the age of 80. To mark her passing the Gay Men’s Chorus on Los Angeles posted this clip from a concert from a few years back where they slipped on their plaid shirts and tied on their bandanas for a medley of Parton’s tunes.
