Call-out for young queer artists

Young gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex people in Western Australia are invited to submit art works for an exhibition at the Freedom Centre this month.

The Freedom Centre is calling out for LGBTI artists under 26 to showcase their works for a Pride month exhibition, opening on the Freedom Centre Open Day on October 29. Freedom Centre coordinator Dani Wright said the exhibition was an opportunity for young people to get their art on display.

‘It’s an ongoing exhibition that started when we originally applied for funding last year but we continued it by using the art space,’ Wright said.

‘The art space was set-up to be able to provide a venue for young people under 26 who were LGBTI+ to get their art out there.’

Wright said the space was originally set up to exhibit works made in workshops at the Freedom Centre, funded by Healthway. She said the next exhibition would follow this year’s pride theme, For Our Community.

‘We might use some of the art for our You’re Not Alone booklet and we’ll definitely use it in the new Freedom Centre tumblr, FC Yeah!’

Submissions close on Wednesday October 26 and can be sent to info@freedom.org.au.
The ExSight exhibition launches on the Freedom Centre Open Day, Saturday October 29 from 12pm. Check out the Freedom Centre tumblr, FC Yeah! or the Freedom Centre website for more information.
