Netflix has revealed the first look at their revival of the classic queer TV series Tales of the City, more than 25 years since the original aired in 1993.

The mini-series, based on the novels of the same name by Armistead Maupin, tells the story of Mary Ann Singleton (Laura Linney) returning to San Francisco and returning to the orbit of Anna Madrigal (Olympia Dukakis) and the queer-centric community of the city.

Linney returns in 2019 as Mary Ann, who returns home to San Francisco and is reunited with her daughter Shawna and ex-husband Brian, twenty years after leaving them behind to pursue her career. Dukakis will also return as Madrigal, as has Maupin as executive producer.

“I couldn’t be more excited about this brand-new incarnation of Tales. It’s set in present-day San Francisco with all the joys and complications that might suggest for the residents of 28 Barbary Lane,” Maupin said of the revival.

“Mrs. Madrigal’s tenants, both old and new, will be entangled in delicious new adventures and ever-expanding possibilities for love.”

The original 1993 run broke ground for LGBT+ visibility on screen, and boasted stars including Ian McKellen, Bob Mackie, Parker Posey, Janeane Garofalo – as well as Lea DeLaria and Sandra Oh in the 2001 sequel.

The trailer, set to the tune of ANOHNI’s For Today I Am A Boy, shows off the new cast of characters including Ellen Page as Mary Ann’s daughter Shawna, Caldwell Tidicue (Bob the Drag Queen) as drag performer Raven, gay Aussie actor Murray Bartlett as Michael Tolliver and trans actress Daniela Vega as Ysela.
