Annie Lennox – Songs of Mass Destruction

Grammy and Oscar winning singer-songwriter Annie Lennox travelled last year to South Africa and campaigned on behalf of women and children infected with HIV/AIDS. But as the title of this album suggests it’s not going to be an easy ride, and with such a heart-wrenching and complex album, the marketers of Sony have executed a skilful plan and included an artist commentary on a separate disc that guides the listener through track by track. Clever dicks! Although one has to admit that her voice has never sounded stronger, this is one of the least appealing of her past three studio efforts. There are times when the pendulum swings in Annie’s favour through songs like Smithereens (Track 3) Through the Glass Darkly (Track 6) and Fingernail Moon (Track 11), but on the whole this album is (over)filled with despair.
