Photographer Eva Fernandez is this year’s TILT artist, an annual program at the City of Melville that invites an artist to create a series of works inspired by the city’s Heathcoate Gallery space’s many faceted past.

Fernadez, inspired by the buildings past life as a mental reception home, describes her new work of large photographs, instalation and video works, ‘I have created a number of works that stimulate a dialogue and critique about the institutional space and the practices that took place there. The works that I have created for the show are quite minimal and very clean with a clinical aesthetic.

Unravel

Australian artist Matt Doust, who is currently based in Los Angeles, will be making a much-anticipated return to Perth this November to present Unravel, a new series of paintings and video work at Venn Gallery.

Unravel features new portraits and video works portraying subjects Los Angeles. The relocation to a new country encouraged the artist to contemplate ideas of disconnection, both physically and personally. A lack of familiarity and sense of isolation led him to further consider internal landscapes and what dictates these as well as examine ideas surrounding faith. Such reflections inspired the development of this work, with Doust investigating how both spiritual and physical experiences can affect the individual.

November 16 – December 21 at the Venn Gallery in Queen Street, Perth.

WAYJO Big Band Festival

The WA Youth Jazz Orchestra are hosting the first ever WA Big Band Festival, as their three ensembles are joined by some of the best big bands in Perth. Held in leafy Hyde Park, the free Big Band Festival will have you swinging and swaying to the smooth and brassy sounds of jazz. Joing WAYJO will be the Horizon Art Orchestra, The Oz Big Band, Hip Mo’ Toast, Retrosonics, Ben and Tilman Experience and MFO.
