JUST ONE BOOK
It’s dire times indeed. One of the world’s leading literary publishing houses, Salt Publishing, is suffering somewhat from the economic crisis and are putting out a call to all fans of literature and poetry to join their cause and buy just one book! Yes, the idea is that if everyone takes the time to pop down to Planet Books in Mt Lawley or New Edition in Fremantle (or even order from their website) and ask at the counter to be shown some titles from Salt Publishing. You won’t be disappointed – Salt publish some of the finest poetry and literature in the world. That and you’ll be doing your part to save small businesses. NORTHERN EXPOSURE
It’s time for a tale, one that deals with power and prejudice, race and relationships. Alaska is the story of Frank, a young man who is overworked and underemployed, a man who just seems to be cruising along. That is until a new supervisor arrives, and what ensues is a struggle that is cold and bitter as the landscape of Alaska. Directed by Michelle Sowden and featuring Jeffrey Jay Fowler and Trushna Mahisuri, this play will get you thinking about your morals and what to do with them. Written by exciting new UK playwright DC Moore, Alaska promises to be suitably chilling. Opens at The Blue Room on June 9. www.blueroom.org.au
BREAKING OUT
They say students know how to party. After all, they have the world at their feet. Not that they aren’t busy studying! But when it comes to break time… well, you might as well open up a toga shop on campus they party that hard. Hence breakOUT at ECU featuring such acts as The Devil Rides Out, Beta Blockers, Homebrewe, Thursdays Page and others. It’s on Sunday June 21 at ECU Joondalup and tickets are available now from BOCS, His Maj or ECU Guild and Tavern. Best bit? Half the proceeds… read that – HALF THE PROCEEDS… will be donated to Joondalup Youth Support Services while the remainder will fund the ECU Guild Book Subsidy Scheme. Goodwill all round http://breakoutconcert.wordpress.com/
SHIPS PASS QUEITLY
Freedom of speech is rarely free. History has proven that. Even today shooting of your mouth in ‘chk-chk-boom’ fashion comes at a cost. And in some countries they still persecute you for saying certain words. Enter The Ships Pass Quietly, a homage to the life of celebrated Russian poet Anna Akhmatova, a literary celebrity in pre-revolutionary St Petersburg. She was forced underground by the revolution but still continued to write in a subversive manner, so much so people used to read her work, memorise it, and then burn the evidence. This production opens at The Subiaco Arts Centre Studio on June 23 and features Alinta Carroll and Ethan Tomas. www.bocsticketing.com.au
CLUB SOUNDTRACK
OUTinPerth has joined forces with Kulcha to present a truly unique experience at the June instalment of Club Soundtrack when we help bring to the silver screen Wild Combination. It’s the story of Arthur Russell, a composer who lived in New York during the ’70s and ’80s and died from AIDS related illnesses in 1992. He was responsible for most of the arts / music cooperatives set up during this time. He was also an amazing musician, his work little heard of – until now! This film is a beautiful documentary and in true micro-cinema fashion is set in the beautiful surrounds of Kulcha. It screens Saturday June 27 with a $1 from each ticket sale being donated to GLCS. Check out the review on page 29. www.myspace.com/clubsoundtrack
IT’S AN ART BAR
All your friends are just so arty. Now they can prove themselves just exactly how arty they are when the Art Gallery of WA opens up ArtBar, their homage to all things cool and decidedly hip. Kicking off their season on June 11 are The Basics, a band worth catching because of their mesmerising sounds. Then on July 2 it’s time to join the king of comedy, Wil Anderson, makes an appearance. Best bit is these events are fully licensed and allow you to sip and mingle amid their current feature exhibition Thing. http://www.artgallery.wa.gov.au/ArtBar/
IDAHO ONLINE
IDAHO has just been and those snazzy cats who organised it have posted a huge swathe of content online as a virtual gallery. There’s a mixture of work for you to peruse, including pieces by Daniel Lutton, Genesis Mansilongan, John Douglas, Dean Geyer and Andrew M Potts… among others. Also associated with the online exhibition (which is just fantastic) are a blog and a map of hate crimes. Admittedly the latter is geared toward Sydney experiences but it does give you a good idea of what the eastern state kids are up. Jump online and see what’s happening! http://www.wix.com/idahosydney/idahotheexhibition
