The book argued against dating and sex before marriage, and has a strong stance against homosexuality. The book was published in 1997 when Harris was just 21 years old.

In a series of Instagram posts Harris, now 44, said he was no longer a Christian and was in the process of getting divorced from his wife of 21 years. He also asked for forgiveness from the LGBTIQ+ communities for his previous views.

“I want to say that I am sorry for the views that I taught in my books and as a pastor regarding sexuality. I regret standing against marriage equality, for not affirming you and your place in the church, and for any ways that my writing and speaking contributed to a culture of exclusion and bigotry. I hope you can forgive me.⁣⁣” Harris said.

Harris previously gave a TED talk where he said many of the things be advocated for in his book were wrong.
