CD Review: Love at the Bottom of the Sea

The Magnetic Fields
Domino

The last few albums from Stephen Merritt’s main band have either been disappointing or challenging to listen to. With this new collection he throws out the distorted guitars and brings back the keyboards and the fun. Never one to shy away from a twee lyric, this collection is full of word play, characters and camp fun. The lead single Andrew in Drag is a bromance love song like no other – instantly catchy, Infatuation (with Your Gyration) sounds like The Human League and I’ve Run Away to Join the Fairies is classic Merritt madness. 15 more love songs equal to his best work.
