Pyne: Marriage equality coming sooner than everyone thinks

Senior government minister Christopher Pyne has predicted that marriage equality will come to Australia sooner than most people are expecting.

News Corp columnist Andrew Bolt has obtained a recording of the minister speaking at a Liberal party function in a Sydney bar on Friday.

Pyne reportedly told the gathering; “we have to deliver a couple of things and one of those we’ve got to deliver before too long is marriage equality in this country. I think it might even be sooner than everyone thinks’’.

The South Australian MP is a supporter of marriage equality and a loyal supporter of Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull. Previously the minister has voiced support for the government’s plebiscite policy.

In his column Andrew Bolt, who has made no secret of his dislike of the PM, predicted that a push for marriage equality would be the end of the Prime Minister’s reign.  Bolt has vowed to play the leaked audio on his SKY New television program on Monday night.

Representatives for Pyne have quickly downplayed his comments.

“The minister did not say action on marriage equality was imminent,” a spokesperson said.

“The minister said that while marriage equality had failed to materialise over the last two years it would become a reality eventually.”
