Claire Clarke: Down-to-Earth Perth

Perth girl Claire Clarke has been making (radio)waves throughout Australia since her album ‘Unhinged’ was released last year. However, unlike many musicians with pop appeal, Claire is not eyeing the bright lights over east, but rather settling into a career right here in WA. OUTinPerth caught up with the proud Perth muso to find out just what she liked about living out west.

Why not Sydney or Melbourne? Sydney and Melbourne are such big cities and there is a lot of stuff going on over there and you can sometimes get your mind real boggled, and in Perth, you come back down to earth.

Best Perth venue to gig? I just recently played a show at the Fly By Night supporting Kate Miller-Heidke and that was a really cool venue… I did a small show for a community radio station at the Hydey [Hyde Park Hotel] and that was one of my favourites. Little, small, intimate – I reckon that’s cool.

Best place to catch hot new acts? You can catch a lot of the latest scene people at Amplifier.

Best audience? The Court Hotel always has a great audience whenever I play there, and I always find the Paddo is quite good.

Thoughts on Pride Fairday? I have so many close friends in the gay community and playing Fairday is so fun every year. Everyone is just rocking out and having a real good time.

Favourite Perth Fashion Designer? Joveeba.

Where are you on a weekend night? I don’t go out that much to be honest. When I do go out, Mount Lawley, like the Scotto [The Flying Scotsman] and the Queens, around those places.

Where do you go when you need some personal time? I like just walking, going out to Leederville or Subiaco and just walking around.

Your ideal day in Perth? I’d probably wake up and go down to Scarborough and have breakfast down on the beach. Then, I’d go to Subiaco or Leederville for some shopping. Then for lunch, probably, go to Friends in King’s Park. In the afternoon, I’d want to go hang out in Freo and go to the markets. At 5 o’clock I’d be going to Hula Bula for some cocktails and then out.
