Is Cory Bernardi set to create his own party?

Bernardi LargeIs Cory Bernardi about to launch his own political party?

The Australian has reported that a company linked to the outspoken senator’s wife has applied to register a series of trademarks for the name ‘The Australian Conservatives’.

Yesterday Senator Bernardi described the project as an extension of his existing Conservative Leadership Foundation but did rule out leaving the Liberal party according to The Australian.

Back in September the right-wing politician warned the Prime Minister there would be  a schism in the Liberal party if he failed to uphold “conservative values”.

Last week the senator reportedly sent an email to his supporters where he repetitively used the phrase “silent majority of Australian Conservatives” who were challenging “the leftist agenda of big government and decaying society”.

The senator has recently highlighted the rise of Donald Trump in the US Republican party as an example of the rise of conservatism.

Senator Bernardi is not due to face re-election until 2019 but if a double dissolution election is called for July 2nd he will go to the polls three years earlier than expected.

While Senator Bernardi has moved to trademark the name The Australian Conservatives’, the name ‘The Australian Conservative Party’ is already being used by an aspiring politician in NSW, although it is not officially registered as a political party.

Peter Wallace, a former policeman, drew attention this week when he posted to social media his concerns about the Safe Schools Coalition anti-bullying program.

“Safe Schools—I put it to you that your real agenda is to convert straight kids to be gay kids.” Mr Wallace wrote.

On his page the aspiring politicians said he planned to run for the senate in the next election. His suggestion that young Australians could be taught to be gay was widely mocked on the social media platform Twitter.

In a tweet earlier today Mr Wallace said he was aware Senator Bernardi was registering a similar name.
