Freedom Centre – New and Improved

The Freedom Centre, a WA AIDS Council (WAAC) affiliated support resource for youth of diverse sexuality and gender (DSG), has redecorated its centre, launched a new look website (www.freedom.org.au) and started Outspace – a new session for queer youth – this month.

According to The Freedom Centre Coordinator Dani Wright, the improvements to the centre have been made to put forward the centre’s best face for WAAC’s upcoming fundraiser STYLEAID. The proceeds from STYLEAID’s photography exhibition and auction all go towards funding The Freedom Centre and are expected to cover over half the centre’s annual budget.

In preparation for STYLEAID, The Freedom Centre has redecorated and purchased all new furniture for the centre and launched a new look website that Ms Wright believes will serve as a single point of contact for all of The Freedom Centre’s information and resources, from pamphlets about coming out to contact information and session times.

The new look website has also increased The Freedom Centre’s profile, making it easier to search for and find through Google and similar search engines.

‘We have had very high numbers this year already. Our numbers this semester is actually double what it was two years ago. So, there is just a steady increase as our scope gets greater, and I’ve had a lot of feedback about people being able to find us more easily,’ said Ms Wright.

To accommodate the growing numbers of youth seeking the centre’s services, The Freedom Centre have added Outspace sessions on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month from noon-4pm.

STYLEAID occurs on July 18 in the Burswood Grand Ballroom. The exact amount raised for The Freedom Centre will be announced following STYLEAID.
