Gay Man Arrested in Ghana for 'Recruiting' Other Men

In Ghana, a 21 year old student has been arrested by police after citizens threatened to kill him for being gay.

The arrest occurred in Walewale, a small town and capital of the West Mamprusi district in the northern region of Ghana.

Ghanaian news outlet Peacefmonline.com published images of the suspect in handcuffs wearing womens’ clothing.

Mahamadu Alhassan, a Muslim sheik, reportedly led a group against the suspect. His family were reportedly targeted by a group carrying weapons and were told their son should not return if released.

Police commander Simon Peter told journalists angry residents were threatening to kill the suspect for allegedly wearing women’s clothing, engaging in gay sex acts and recruiting other men in the community to be gay.

Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) have spoken out against the treatment of the man and his famiily, stating it is a violation of human rights.

In Ghana, same sex sex acts are punishable with imprisonment.
