‘Blue is the Warmest Colour’, a film focussing on a lesbian romance has won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Tunisian Director Abdelliatif Kechiche helmed the film which is based on a French graphic novel by Julie Maroh.
The story is one of sexual awakening, a young woman named Adele meets a blue haired art student and they begin a relationship. The film explores themes of women’s careers and concepts of class in French society.
The film contains graphic sex scenes, which some critics have suggested may need to be edited prior to a mainstream cinema release. The sex scenes in the film are not simulated and one reportedly lasts for over 10 minutes.
The Palme d’Or is the festivals top prize, previous winners include Terrance Malick’s ‘The Tree of Life’, Gus Van Sant’s ‘Elephant’, Lar’s Von Tier’s ‘Dancer in the Dark’, Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Pulp Fiction’ and Mike Leigh’s ‘Secrets and Lies’.
