Singer Macy Gray’s performance at The Astor Theatre in Perth last night has been described as one of the worst shows ever by audience members.
Audience members have complained that the singer arrived on stage more than an hour after the scheduled start time, shouting out to the audience “Hello Sydney!”
Promoted as a combination of Gray singing some of her famous tunes, and a DJ set where she would play some of her favourite R&B hits, the audience were surprised when she kicked things of with a John Farnham tune followed by some Bob Marley.
Gray reportedly struggled with her laptop, before beginning to sing two of her own songs. Some audience members have suggested that the singer was lip-syncing.
After the short performance, Gray thanked the crowd and wished them good night. After a break the singer returned to the stage and played some more tunes from her laptop, but by stage the audience had given up and poured out of the venue.
The Facebook pages of the venues, ticket sellers and the promoter have been inundated with complaints from punters demanding refunds.
“Absolutely disgusted in last nights show. I was so embarrassed, I bought the tickets and took a friend for their birthday what a waste!” one patron wrote.
“In all my years of concerts, festivals, theatre outings I’ve never left an event disappointed until this evening!” said another.
“I am still in disbelief of what I witnessed and experienced tonight. Felt like something out of the twilight zone” remarked another concert goer, before noting that their 12 year old child had more skill as a DJ.
Promoter TnT Events agreed with fans saying Gray’s performance had not met their expectations.
“The Event was promoted as a Live DJ Set on the Astor Theatre website as well as Ticketek.
“Unfortunately as the promoter it is up to the artist to create their own show not ourselves.
“At this stage we are talking with Macy Gray’s manager.” the promoter said in a statement.
The Perth show is not the only disaster on Gray’s current tour. Footage has emerged from the singer’s gig held in Bali a few days ago.
On that occasion concert goers reported the singer arrived on stage at 11pm, for a show that was advertised as starting at 4pm in the afternoon. Attendees complained that Gray appeared incoherent and just played songs off her laptop.
Finn’s Beach Club in Bali offered an apology for the performance, and gave a refund to all GA ticket holders. The singer also issued an apology via her Facebook page.
The singer was scheduled to appear at The Beach Hotel in Byron Bay, but has now pulled out of that appearance.
