Meshell Ndegeocello covers TLC's 'Waterfalls'

Meshell Ndegeocello has released her version of the TLC song Waterfalls, and it’s a much more chilled out version than the original tune.

For her latest album Ventriloquism Ndegeocello has covered some classic RnB anthems including songs from Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam, Sade, Force MDs, Janet Jackson, Prince and Sade.

The new record is Ndegeocello’s twelfth studio album. The jazz guitarist and singer began her career on Madonna’s Maverick label and played bass on some of Madonna’s tunes.

She’s often made references to sexuality on her albums, Ndegeocello identifies as bisexual. One of her most loved tunes is Leviticus Faggot from her 1996 album Peace Beyond Passion which tells stories of people encountering extreme homophobia – unusual subject matter in it’s day for an R&B dance track,

OUTinPerth spoke to the musician a few years ago and she told us drew on personal experiences to create the song.

“I grew up in an environment where there was homophobia and it came out of a bunch of experiences all bundled up into one song, it just came from life. It’s a story that a lot of people can tell.”

TLC released their song about the effects of illegal drugs and the AIDS crisis back in 1995, and it became the first number one song to include a reference to AIDS.
