New Faces To Marriage Equality

Twin brothers will become the new faces to the same-sex marriage debate after a new national advertising campaign was launched today, portraying how marriage equality is affecting Australian families. GetUp! and Australian Marriage Equality collaborated on the advertisement that features twin brothers David, who is heterosexual and Paul, who is homosexual. The 50-second advertisement focuses on the similarities between the two brothers until they talk about their relationships and why one brother can get married while the other can not.

‘Growing up we shared the same things, same birthdays, toys, clothes, even the same bad clothes,’ David says on the advertisement.

‘So why are we different now? I can get married and Paul can’t… It shouldn’t matter.’
Australian Marriage Equality convenor Alex Greenwich told OUTinPerth the timing of advertisement’s release, coinciding with Valentine’s Day, was intentional.

‘Valentine’s Day is a day when we think about love and think about relationships and it’s a day when a lot of gay and lesbian couples realise that, unfortunately the law doesn’t recognise their relationship equally,’ Greenwich said.

No Brisbane Fair Day In 2011
As Sydney wraps up its 2011 Mardi Gras Fair Day comes news the Brisbane event won’t go ahead this year. Brisbane Pride Festival (BPF) committee has confirmed there will not be a Fair Day this year due to financial difficulties. Despite a spirited fundraising effort by a new robust and enthusiastic BPF committee, monies raised have barely made a dent into the debt from previous festivals. Reportedly, BPF have not finalised their accounts for more than three years with their annual returns still to be lodged with Queensland authorities.

Dude, where’s my zine?
A Victorian trans* man has started a new gender-diverse focused zine that will shed some light on masculinity and transgender people. ‘Dude’, a trans* male-specific zine was launched in Melbourne last month as a free and creative resource for transgender men and the wider community. Dude editor Jez Pez said the inspiration for Dude formed from a gap in resources for the transgender community. ‘There are not enough (resources) as there isn’t enough funding to create them,’ Pez said.
