“He was a bright light in this world for his family, friends, and fans,” his family said in a statement confirming his passing.

Los Angeles police responded to a call reporting a death just before noon on Friday local time, they are conducting an investigation.

Miller found success as a musician and a producer in his late teens and had released several albums. His debut record Blue Slide Park came out in 2011. His most recent album Swimming, which was released last month was his firth album.

The musician was previously in a relationship with singer Ariana Grande from 2016 to 2018. The couple split in May this year and she has subsequently become engaged to comedian Pete Davidson.

Miller, whose real name was Malcolm McCormick, started putting out mix-tapes in his native Pittsburgh, and quickly found fame among rap fans. The head of Warner Bros. Records Tom Corson said in a statement that his death was a devastating loss.

“Mac was a hugely gifted and inspiring artist, with a pioneering spirit and a sense of humor that touched everyone he met,” Corson said, “Mac’s death is a devastating loss and cuts short a life and a talent of huge potential, where the possibilities felt limitless. We join all of his fans across the globe in extending our thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.”
