Review | ‘Crème de la crème’ brings circus skill and cheeky comedy

Crème de la crème Cabaret | Ice Cream Factory | til 14 Feb | ★ ★ ★ ★

Head First Acrobats have made a name for themselves as one of the best acts to see at Fringe World, bringing their own blend of outstanding talent and cheeky humour with their shows GODZ, Elixir and Railed.

This time, the team are trying their hand at cabaret with Crème de la crème, opting for a hosted showcase performance, as opposed to their usual narrative style.

Crème de la crème brings everything a Fringe World audience has come to expect from the crew: incredible circus skills, physical comedy, and an endearingly silly sense of humour.

The team, as always, wowed with their displays of circus skills. Audience participation added to the stakes as host Cal effortlessly continued on the mic while handling very dangerous objects, and Grand Finale man took the crowd on a whirlwind tour through an impressive selection of classic circus manoeuvres usually reserved to close out a show with a bang.

For the actual grand finale, a death-defying knife throwing number had the audience gasping as AJ hurled blades at the incredibly calm Jess, posing effortlessly against a standing target.

Unfortunately for the talented troupe, they were somewhat swallowed up by the spacious outdoor venue at the Ice Cream Factory, making what would be a grand spectacle in a spiegeltent feel quite small on the stage. Despite this, Head First Acrobats’ talent shines bright under the night sky, a perfect place to be during a sweltering summer week.

If you’re looking for a show that brings circus skill, snickers and a cheeky bit of skin in equal measure – Crème de la crème is for you.

Crème de la crème runs until Friday, 14 February. Head to fringeworld.com.au for more.
