The popular singer has previously spoken about being non-binary and has opened up about how they prefer to be addressed.

“After a lifetime of being at war with my gender I’ve decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out.”

Back in March Smith told Jamella Jamil that they saw themselves as being on a spectrum between male and female.

“I’m not male or female, I think I flow somewhere in between. It’s all on the spectrum.” Smith described being non-binary as “your own special creation”.

In their latest Instagram post, Smith said they were nervous about making the request.

“I’m so excited and privileged to be surrounded by people that support me in this decision but I’ve been very nervous about announcing this because I care too much about what people think but fuck it!

“I understand there will be many mistakes and mis gendering but all I ask is you please please try. I hope you can see me like I see myself now. Thank you.”

Smith said they were to ready to “eloquently speak at length about what it means to be non binary” but hoped to share more in the future. Smith gave thanks to the activists and leaders of the non binary and trans communities who have helped them gain so much clarity and understanding.
