Scene Out 65

Well I hope you took my tip and trekked out to see JDS, at Ambar on the 16th. The gig was close to sold out, and the man had the entire crowd jumping – I know, I had the sore calf muscles to show for it the day after. On a more subdued note (but only just), the Fairy Ball was also another Club West success, with a good sized audience and its usual repertoire of entertaining shows. Is it just me, or are plenty of other people as enjoyably entertained by the Auslan translators as they are by the ‘actual’ performance?

Looking ahead…

April 7th, on the Easter long weekend, looks like a big date in the queer diary this month with the crews from Climaxx and Lick both throwing parties (Just imagine what would happen if the two of them got together and had a party love-child!) Climaxx serves up Homo A-Go-Go at Gilkisons. This time around it’s all about the 60s – think man bags, hand bags and teeny-tiny go-go shorts. Tickets are $50 and the headline DJ on the decks is Matt Steer.

Lick meanwhile team up with Connections to host Playboy Mansion, complete with playboy bunnies, chandeliers and champagne. There will be shows, giveaways, Cinnamon and Moosh on the decks AND your chance to get your face on the cover of Perth’s premier dyke rag – WOW. So dress up and head out, the door will open at 8 and tickets are just $10. Please note it’s a lesbian-only event ’til midnight (though they have a stated trans-friendly policy – yay!), and then open to all after that.

Connections otherwise serves up its regular three nights a week; Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, with a brand new show running in April – Primal Urges. Connies are promising dirty, sexy bondage.. that’s my interest piqued right there.. as well as extra trade..ing hours for Anzac Day on Tuesday April 24th. The theme is Uniform and any uniform will do – millitary, medical, school girl or chemical. Dress in your best and get down there.

Speaking of sexy, dirty bondage and uniforms, the final instalment in the Spank! fetish parties for 2007 is happening on April 28, also at Gilkisons. The theme this time around is Little Britain and there is a very long list of interesting entertainers lined up for the night. With absinthe cocktails on offer in the dungeon and a best-dressed award to be issued at 3am, what more reason do you need to get on your best red, white, blue or sexy black outfit and get down there? A word from the wise – get an early bird ticket for $35 and save yourself dollars to spend on the outfit or the cocktails…

Bent Knee Creative continue to deliver F**k Me I’m Famous at the Shed to inject a little queer pubbing into your Wednesday nights. Tip is that the evening really gets pumping as the night progresses, so find an excuse to turn up to work late Thursday and get yourself along.

For something a little more highbrow, there’s always the Pride Women’s Sundowner, at Grapeskin, every 2nd Wednesday of the month. But wait there’s more! Pride is launching a new regular event, Pride Professionals, which will meet on the third Wednesday of every month at the Brisbane. In a surprise twist the launch will be held on a *Monday* night – that’s Monday the 30th April.

If you thought the Court is a bit quiet on the ‘events’ front for April following the Easter Extravaganza on the 5th you’d be right. But it’s only because they’re pouring all their creative juices into getting the renovations done and dusted, so don’t despair. Besides, our favourite pub will continue to pump out its usual 7 days a week shenanigans in amongst all the hammering and painting so I’d best not hear any of you complaining.

And finally, my picks of the month from the straight scene?

That’d have to be Groove Armada at the Freo Arts Centre, 5th of April, and Rennie Pilgrim, godfather of funky breaks at Ambar, 27th of April.
