As the cold weather ends its frosty spell, the fl owers are OUT along with birds, bees and social butterfl ies… welcome everyone to spring and Pride!

Justin Timberlake may have brought sexy back, but October brings the outdoors back. While the mainstays of most social calendars this month is the full lineup of Pride that’s defi nitely not all that October has to offer. (see the offi cial Pride Guide for a calendar of events as well as OUTinPerth’s Community section this issue and our special mid-month Pride issue for late breaking events and highlights)

October gets a start with Park Life on October 1 in East Perth, as lovers of electro, hip-hop, beats, house and breaks unite for a great public holiday (we just don’t have enough of those do we). MIA is back to perform and if last year’s Big Day Out is anything to go by, the punters have one hell of a show to look forward to. If Park Life whets your electro-appetite, be sure to get tickets for Summadayze this month – they sell out fast.

What used to be a leisurely sophisticated day of wine tasting and cheese is now a debaucherous day of wine swilling and barbeques – be part of it at Spring in the Valley on Sunday 13 October in the Swan Valley. And be safe, catch a shuttle bus from Midland station.

On the live music scene, Marilyn Manson and Darryn Hayes from Savage Garden are both playing October 13, unfortunately in separate shows (I’d be fi rst in line for the show that brought those two together). Josh Groban is in town the following night and Good Charlotte are playing the Burswood Dome on October 17. Sarah Blasko sails into Perth October 21 and Angus and Julia Stone wind up the action October 25 and 26.

Girls – whatever you do, don’t miss the Pride Women in Uniform Boat Cruise on October 7 – apparently the last one was outrageous! There’s not much time to recover though – on Wednesday 10 October, 6.30pm, start your night at the Pride Women’s Sundowner at Grapeskin and stay out for Women’s mud wrestling at Connections – it’ll be worth the following day’s headache… besides no one gets any work done on Thursdays anyways.

On Wednesday 17 October Pride Professionals meet at the Brisbane Hotel 6pm sharp. Tailored suits and business cards are compulsory. (Not really, but you’ll look much better that way – trust me).

Anyone for Tennis? If you’re up for chasing a few balls around a court followed by the odd sausage and a drink or two, check out Loton Park’s Open Day on Saturday the 6th. It’s from 1-6pm, just rock up.

When the working day is done, oh Bears, they wanna have fu-un. On Saturday 13 October the Bears take over the Den at 9pm for a growling good time, and on Sunday they have their Sunday Social Party (or is that recovery party?) at 3pm – venue TBC. If they aren’t tired little teddy bears by the end of the month, the Bears will celebrate Octoberfest at the Den Friday 26 October.

The Court will be a hub of activity for Pride related shenanigans as well as the host for their regular lineup of nights: Courtship single nights on Tuesdays, amateur drag on Wednesday nights, Drag Bootcamp on Thursdays, and End of Week parties on Friday and Saturday nights, and all new Jazz Sundays. The Court will also give Courtney Act the stage on October 19 and 25. Last, but least, keep an eye out for the Court’s special Pride art contest this month.

Meanwhile, at Connections, it’s Pole Position every Wednesday night (special lesbian mudwrestling edition on October 10 and 24), Beatbox every Friday, and Nightmare every Saturday. Brash and Sassy – Perth’s grand-daughters of electro-Italo disco heat up the fl oor at Connies on October 12. I saw these girls play at a magazine launch last month and they are deadly…don’t miss them.

My hottt! local acts to watch out for this month are Harlequin League and Brash and Sassy (as per my above ranting and raving). Venues to see and be seen at include the Bakery for an alternative electro scene on Friday nights and Must Winebar for pre-drinks on Saturday nights. Whatever you get up to this month take it easy – Summer hasn’t kicked in yet, but I’ve got a feeling it’s going to be long and hot.
