Q-Force is a collaboration between Hayes, Brooklyn Nine-Nine writer Gabe Liedman and production giants Mike Schur and Todd Milliner, and has been commissioned for a 10-episode premiere season.

The half-hour animated comedy tells the story of a secret agent, presumably played by Hayes, and his team of queer superheroes. Milliner and Hayes say they’ve been brainstorming the espionage idea for a very long time.

“We were thinking how do we get to do gay spy and every week, and the only way to do that is animated, because we can do all of the fun parts of a James Bond film,” Milliner told Deadline.

“We can travel, we can have big chase sequences; animation is allowing us that freedom.”

Hayes said he was concerned that studios wouldn’t greenlight a live-action show in the spy genre if it had a gay lead.

“Hopefully they will, but that doesn’t seem like right now.”
