Smashing Dance Stereotypes

If traditional ballets are not your thing, look out for the Bad Boys of Dance as they thrust their way through the boundaries of conventional ballet. Coming to Perth next month is internationally-acclaimed Rock the Ballet direct from New York and sell-out seasons throughout Europe. This energetic production lavishes in its pop-rock soundtrack and pool of talented young, male dancers and one woman.

Dancer Chris McCarthy spoke about his whirlwind experience with the show and what to expect when it hits the west coast.
‘Rock the Ballet is a fun, high energy show that pushes the envelope of male dancing, challenges the classic traditions of Ballet, and delivers a quality of performance that is exciting and one of a kind.’ Mr McCarthy said.

The show incorporates musical theatre, hip hop, ballet, tap, contemporary and gymnastics for a fusion that is sure to get the heart racing. Creator Rasta Thomas has labelled this new brand of ballet as Pop-Ballet; fit for the 21st Century.

‘I would consider Rasta Thomas’ Rock the Ballet to be the “Robin Hood” of Dance… bridging the gap between traditional ballet and the commercial youth of “today”,’ said McCarthy.

What makes this production so definitively out-of-the-box, is its radical use of music and visuals. The soundtrack boasts a collection of pop classics including Queen, Michael Jackson, U2, Prince and Lenny Kravitz.

‘What’s so great about this playlist is, whether or not the audience knows the lyrics or love the songs, its music that is everywhere. That in itself brings a level of comfort that will help the audience to have fun and just enjoy the show,’ McCarthy added.

Another intrinsic quality to the show is its living scenery; made by a menagerie of images projected onto a big screen on stage. The evolving backdrop works in unison with the music and dancers to create an explosive dance performance.

The show was created in 2008 by founder and principal dancer Rasta Thomas and has travelled to Berlin, Vienna, Frankfurt and Hamburg which it took by storm. The show will be touring most capital cities throughout the month, holding its Australian finale in Perth. Rock the Ballet will premiere at the Regal Theatre in Perth on June 29 and runs till July 17. Tickets are on sale at www.ticketek.com.au.
