Something To Sing About

The Gay and Lesbian Singers of WA have reason to be excited.

Not only are they busy preparing for their twentieth anniversary concert happening in November, they are also putting together a few ‘flash mobs’ –where a group appear in a public place, perform a song or dance routine and migrate back into the crowd.

Member of the choir Bev Fabb said they became aware the City of Vincent was offering grants for innovative performance and applied for a grant.

“The choir has always had a strong emphasis on supporting one another and supporting our community,” Bev said.

The City of Vincent approved the application and the choir is able to add dance moves to their repertoire of ABBA, Queen, Bob Marley and Motown hits.

“We also like singing songs which affirm our community, such as One Voice, Over the Rainbow and True Colours,” she said.

This year has been a busy one for the choir; they performed at the Out and Loud Festival in Hobart, a Living Proud event, are booked for the pride service at Saint Andrew’s Church in October and the big celebration, their anniversary concert on November 9 in Fremantle.

GLCSWA is one of the longest established LGBTI groups in Perth and its members have entertained crowds at numerous AIDS commemorations, Fairdays, Pride Parades and equality rallies as well as events for local governments in Denmark and Subiaco.

New members are always welcome and no previous musical experience is required.
