Award winning play 'The Season' announces a season at The Maj

Fresh from its success at the 2018 Green Room Awards where it received three awards, including the coveted Theatre Companies Production Award, Tasmania Performs’ production of The Season comes to His Majesty’s Theatre for a strictly limited touring run.

The Season tells the stories of the Duncans, a family that returns to Big Dog Island off the northern coast of Tasmania for six weeks every year for the Mutton Bird Season, just as Tasmanian Aboriginal people have done for over 10,000 years. Amid the threat of snakes – and Pop’s explosive temper – the family reunites with a country and culture still very much alive.

However, the Duncans are, first and foremost, a family; and, like any other family, they have secrets, long memories, tragic histories and heartbreakingly funny perspectives that come tumbling out around the traditional practice of muttonbirding.

The Season was written by playwright Nathan Maynard, who drew upon his own families experiences.  The show is directed by Isaac Drandic and features seven cast members.

The creation of the show was supported by Tasmania Performs, which is a Tasmania Arts initiative that seeks to develop and promote emerging independent artists as well as producing the work of these artists and that more established artists and companies.

The Season has been described as “a deadly funny portrait of a singular corner of our world, and this original acclaimed production is raucous and rowdy celebration of tradition and the bonds that unite us”.

When the show was on in Melbourne Fairfax Media said it was reminiscent of the best plays by David Williamson.

The Season will play at His Majesties Theatre from 24-25 August. Tickets online through Perth Theatre Trust or phone 6212 9292 or from Perth Theatre Trust Box Offices.
