The UK Government are moving to lower the age at which transgender people can apply for legal recognition.

The Transgender Equality Inquiry Report released on January 14 recommends over 30 actions to the Government, including lowering the age at which trans people can receive a Gender Recognition Certificate.

The report outlines that it is important that clear safeguards are in place to ensure that long-term decisions about gender recognition are made at an appropriate time.

“Subject to this caveat, a persuasive case has been made to us in favour of reducing the minimum age at which applications can be made for gender recognition,” the report reads.

“We recommend that provisions should be made to allow 16- and 17-year-olds, with appropriate support, to apply for gender recognition, on the basis of self-declaration.”

The report calls on the government to formulate a new plan for transgender equality over the next six months.
