What's on in Visual Arts – November

Be you cross dresser or fashionista or both, you are sure to be excited by Radical Elegance – the first solo exhibition of women’s clothing by renowned Japanese couturier Yohji Yamamoto. Featuring forty ensembles representing Yamamoto’s work since 1981, the pieces create structured silhouettes of the body that incorporate romance and humour. Radical Elegance opens at the Art Gallery of Western Australia on November 1 and runs through February 17.

For an obsession of a different sort, self-confessed cardboard connoisseur Susan Flavell presents Unhorsed, an exhibition of new sculptures. Heroic in scale but not in material the works bear the marks of their production – the mistakes, the over drawings – can all be seen up close. Flavell’s works can be found in the State’s major collections with an exhibition at the Fremantle Arts Centre October 27 – December 2.

Returning for the seventh time in 2007, the BankWest Contemporary Art Prize will be presented at PICA November 1-25. Featuring a cross-section of two-dimensional work in a variety of styles and techniques, the exhibition will include works by Jean Astbury, Aadje Bruce, Eric Coates, Joshua Fitzpatrick, Kitpi, Ngarra Omborrin, Joshua Webb and Christopher Young. First prize, which this year was won by Fremantle artist Olga Cironis, was a very tidy $15 000.

For art outside of a gallery space, Melbourne based artist Van Thanh Rudd literally carries his, on foot, throughout public spaces. Van sees his art as avenue for social change and a way to spark debate around issues related to conflict, genocide and the exploitation of human and natural resources. To interact with this fascinating artist and his work catch him during the Fremantle Festival November 22-26.

Randell Lane Fine Art also presents a collection of works that, whilst housed inside a contemporary gallery are very much inspired by the spaces outside it. Uwankara Ngura Palya is an exhibition by the Tjunga Palya Artists of South Australia. Their vibrant works will be on display at the gallery October 26 – November 12.
