When our Children Come Out – Dr Maria Pallotta-Chiarolli

When our children come outClosets are for clothes, not for people. But for many “coming out” is a journey, even a life long process. More often than not, it’s the experiences of homophobia, lack of support and understanding that make “coming out” a roller-coaster ride for many young same-sex attracted people.

“When our Children Come Out” is a beautifully complied book by Dr Pallotta-Chiarolli which richly draws on the personal experiences and stories from a large, diverse cross-section of people: parents, families, friends, teachers, youth workers and young people themselves.

The book is also a practical guide that provides readers with strategies for the preventable abuse that is homophobia. It greatly discusses the importance of acceptance and inclusion to the general health and well-being of young same-sex attracted people, and the ways of achieving this.

This is truly a unique book because it does encompass all those affected when a young person comes out before the world. The book will uplift, inspire and move you.

Dr Maria Pallotta-Chiarolli is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Health and Social Development at Deakin University; Honorary Lifelong Patron of P-flag (Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) Victoria; and the author of “Girls’ Talk” and “Boy’s Stuff”.
