Adelaide’s Feast Festival is seeking couples who would like to share their love for each other in a public commitment ceremony to be held during this year’s Festival from the 10th to 25th of November. Although gay marriage isn’t legal in Australia, this event will give couples the chance to make a stand publicly and commit their love for each other in front of family, friends and members of the public.
The event is to be co-ordinated by Feast’s Artistic Director, Daniel Clarke and Amy Murphy Higgins, Artistic Director of Purr Productions. Both Daniel and Amy have already married their partners. Daniel was married to partner Nick Pelomis in London late last year, whilst Amy and her partner Rachelle have had two ceremonies – one in Canada and one in Australia.
Daniel says, ‘This should be one of the highlights of the Feast calendar – it would be fantastic if couples from all over Australia came to Adelaide to commit their love for each other. It certainly won’t be a traditional ceremony and we really want the input of all couples who want to get married.’
At this stage in the planning Feast wants all people who want to take part in the ceremony to register their interest so that a meeting can be organized to develop the format of the event. The organizers are very excited about the event as it will allow people to celebrate the diverse and beautiful relationships people have with each other.
Feast’s theme for 2007 is LOVE. The Festival will provide a platform for the many forms love takes within our community to be acknowledged, accepted and understood.
The Feast Festival is an open access arts festival, which means that any artist who considers their work appropriate for a queer festival can register an event. The Festival includes theatre, cabaret, film, visual arts, literature, music, comedy, drag, forums and many community events.
