RTRFM’s ‘Full Frequency’ to celebrate 30 years on air

At 3pm each weekday afternoon since 1995 the sound of a succession of audio grabs have rung out across the airwaves.

“I’ve got the power”, “I know you’re gonna dig this”, “The music just turns me on”, “Get down to the funky beat”, “It began in Africa”, “Give me a big beat”, “Hear the drummer get wicked”, “Okay, roll the drums.” and “Now give me a beat”, are among the slather of late 80s and early 90s samples that make up the distinctive theme tune of Full Frequency on RTRFM.

The community radio station’s afternoon dance music show bucks the trend in radio programming for banal banter and easy-going tunes in the late afternoon. Instead for 30 years there’s been the sounds of cutting-edge dance music exploring a myriad of styles. As is often the case on RTRFM you’ll hear music here that you won’t find anywhere else.

Kevin, Nafta and Rok Riley.

To celebrate the show’s massive three decade run, the crew are holding a massive party to mark the anniversary. It’ll be a free all-day party at PICA Bar on Saturday 30 November.

Some of the finest DJs to call Boorloo home have had the honour of spinning the decks during Full Freq over the past 30 years, and many of them are going to be behind the decks at the celebration.

Monday’s Micah & Mittens, Tuesday’s Allstate, Wednesday’s Dart, Thursday’s Nina BC, and Friday’s Nafta, Yikes & Rok Riley all day and night in the courtyard, alongside special guests.

The show has come a long way since RTRFM was located on the grounds of UWA back in 1995. Now based in Mount Lawley the station has a global audience and recently launched online companion station RTRFM2.

Full Frequency has come a long way since its launch on 24th January 1995.

OUTinPerth Co-editor Graeme Watson is a preseter at RTRFM 92.1. He fills in when people are ill, you never know when he might suddenly be on air. He’s recently hosted the hip-hop show All City and The Breakfast program.
