Madonna wins Artist of the Year at Video Music Awards

Madonna has a long history with the VMA’s, she performed a very memorable rendition of Like a Virgin at the inaugural awards in 1984 which saw her rolling around on the floor in a wedding dress. She also caused a sensation when she locked lips with Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears during her the 2003 event.

Today Madonna returned to the VMAs for the first time in 23 years, she had eleven nominations for her recent Confessions II record, and after performing an impressive opening number she made multiple trips to the stage to pick up the trophies.

The opening number saw Madonna create parts of her stunning Confessions II video including performing Bring Your Love alongside Sabrina Carpenter and Dancerteria with Charli XCX.

Like the Danceteria video, there was no shortage of cameos with Seth Rogan, Debi Mazar, Sombr, Julia Garner, and music producer Andrew Watt taking part in the performance.

Madonna won Best Choreography, Best Cinematography, Best Dance, Best Collaboration for her tune with with Sabrina Carpenter, and Artist of the Year.

When accepted the Best Danbce award she asked presenters Troye Sivan and Charli XCX to stand closer as she delivered her acceptance speech, and even sang some of Troye’s latest song Party.

During one of her trips to the stage she recalled that memorable performance back in the 1980s, when she sported a ‘Boy Toy’ belt buckle and ended up writhing on the floor.

“I performed at the first MTV Awards 43 years ago.” she told the audience.

“I had a little problem with my shoes; one of my stilettos fell off, and I dove onto the stage to try to make myself look cute and sexy and like I meant to do it.”

“My dress went up, and my butt cheek was hanging out, and in those days butt cheeks were not hanging out; I just want to remind you. And I went backstage feeling really proud of myself, and my manager told me that my career was over.”

“I really want you to know that I spent the last year-and-a-half finding myself, believing in myself and really making the music I wanted to make. My hope for all of you here tonight is that you spend the next year or the rest of your life doing the same. Finding yourself, and believing in yourself.” Madonna said.
