Loton Park Reach Winter Comp Semis

Both the men’s and women’s team from Loton Park Tennis Club have made the Winter League semi-finals. The men’s team won the Division 1 winter comp last year and were in fourth place entering this year’s semi-finals. According to men’s team member Geoff Younger, the competition has been notably stronger in 2008. The men’s team, which consists of Geoff Younger, Troy Hancock, Rod Palmer, Pierre Murat and Shaun Mays (only 4 of the 5 play in any given competition), are hoping to upset some of the teams higher on the ladder for a repeat of last year.

On the women’s side, Sonya Krishnan, Claire Giles, Roberta and Lisa finished in second place after being knocked from the top spot in Division 3 in the last round of the regular season. The women will take on Ocean Ridge during the semi-finals and hope a strong post-season performance will enable them to move up to Division 2 next year.

The Winter League finals will occur in the first week of August.

Avon Descent Paddles Along

Perth’s own elite powered and paddle craft event, the Brookfield Multiplex Avon Descent, happens on August 2nd and 3rd. The 134km race begins in Northam, 100km to Perth’s east. From there competitors traverse 57km on day 1, stopping at Boral Campsite at Cobbler Pool overnight. Day 2 is then another 76km to the finish line at Riverside Gardens in Bayswater.

The Avon Descent began in 1973 when 49 competitors traversed the Avon and Swan Rivers. Since then, more than 25,000 people have made the journey. For more information on the event, visit www.avondescent.com.au.
