The People in Your Gaybourhood

For a lesbian that has lived in the gaybourhood since before she even knew she loved women,  Marion Towndrow is best equipped on the inside story of where Perth’s lesbian population reside.

For those of you itching to know where the ‘gaybourhood’ can be found – here’s a list compiled by various different professionals:

Mount Gayley (Mount Lawley), Inglegay (Inglewood), Gayswater (Bayswater), Gaylands (Maylands), Highgayte (Highgate), and Leedergay (Leederville).

So what draws you same-sex attracted folk to these areas? According to Marion – proximity to Northbridge and gay bars, an endless pool of dog-friendly parks, great coffee shops owned by lesbians, and an array of cool pubs and wine bars.

Now, we all love our double-shot-long-macchiato-topped-up. Marion promises the best place to get it is Milk’d, especially if you’re down with supporting your rainbow community –

‘Great coffee shop, the owner sponsors a lot of events in the gay community, Coode Street in Mt Lawley is run by a couple of gay guys, a really nice spot for breakfast on a Sunday morning.’

If you’re new to the area and looking to make like-minded friends, Marion recommends investing in a dog – ‘you’re always bumping into lesbians around here, the dog park big time, it’s great for making friends’, she said.

Right in the hub of Inglewood, Marion’s beautiful long term home was in fact inherited – ‘from my ex partner. She passed away of motor neuron disease unexpectedly, it came on out of the blue. We were best of mates’, she said.

When asked if she could imagine living anywhere else, the answer is simple – ‘I can’t imagine it, I have been travelling and every time I’ve been happy to come home and live exactly where I live. It’s a good place to be, I will live here indefinitely’.
