Greenland is an autonomous country that has been operating as a self-governing nation within the Kingdom of Denmark since 2009. It is located within the continent of North America but is politically associated with Europe.

The country adopted Denmark’s law allowing civil unions for same sex couples in 1996 but did not take on same sex marriage when Denmark did so in 2012.

In February this year it was announced that a bill to adopt those laws would be debated in parliament. The legislation, which legalises same sex marriage and adoption for same sex couples, was unanimously passed by the parliament with a vote of 27-0 with two absentations.

The law will come into effect on October 1st.
